So, here I am, just listening to my iTunes and surfing the web -- nothing intense at all -- when all of a sudden I get a Kernel Panic. My screen dims up and it tells me that I need to press the power button for a few seconds and then restart the computer.
So, I do as I'm told. It starts up into nothingness. Just a black screen.
I go on to try this a few other times, but still, there is nothing. Nothing boots up at all!
So, I go and look for my Apple care package and I see that there's a disk in there. The instructions say that i should try the disk first before calling Apple Care. I plunk it in, press the power button, and hold down the C key.
So, the CD seems to make a few sounds, but nothing is going on. The screen is still empty, and not even one pixel dare flickers on.
So, I try to get the CD out. Guess what, that doesn't work either.
Next, I call Apple Care. I got in right away with no wait at all and the guy was friendly and helpful.
We tried a zillion key combos, eve the Open Firmware one, which did nothing. At that point he told me that I've got to get it repaired. My phone was dying too (everything is dying around me for some reason).
He mentioned earlier on that it might be the RAM, so I actually took it out and re-tried with no luck.
Since it's an iMac, one ram sick is built into the computer, so there's no way that I can take it out. I just took out the extra one, but it didn't seem to improve anything.
And, lucky me, I get to work during the hours that the local Apple retailer is open, where I guess I go to get it repaired.
Although, I was able to get Tuesday off, so I'll go in then.
Still, it really bites. Worse of all, I have projects in my iMac that I don't have any back up copies -- and I need them! It's hours and hours of work in the last three weeks that's down the drain if I can't ever get them again. It's really bad. It's also projects that are on a deadline that I can't just not get done. So, it's really bad.
I don't know if this will work, but I'm going to try a target disk mode, and maybe I can get the files off.
I never expected my Mac to crash like this. I just hope I can get it fixed as soon as I can and get the files for certain. If, at the least, get those files.
My day job isn't that nice to give me the time off to get this stuff, since it's for a second self-employed job (doing websites and advertisements for small businesses). Losing all of that information (such as over 100 product shots) is going to cost me and hurt me in a not-so-good-way.
So, if anyone has any suggestions, they would surely be appreciated. I usually back up everyone and a while, but I've been busy with several projects at once that I haven't backed the stuff I've done in the last few weeks.
And, honestly, I've had my Powerbook for 2 years now and never, ever had any problems, so I got out of the habit of backing up every other day like I did with Windows. Windows always crashed on me and I got so used to losing data I pretty much lived off back up CDs (and re-installing Windows constantly, or having to fix it somehow).
So, I was really thrown off guard with this. I didn't expect it at all and thus I don't have copies of anything that I've done in the last few weeks.
Not fun. Not fun at all...
If I can at least get those files off, then I can keep working on my projects. If I have to wait until Tues when I can see the dealership, and then who knows now long I have to wait for repairs... I don't know what I'm going to do.
