Some benchmarks of some latest DirectX games in Vista: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/DirectX10-Geforce-Radeon,review-29666.html

In conclusion, most cards seem to struggle to come up with decent framerates, unless you spend a fortune on a GeForce 8800.

The Radeon HD2600 Pro/XT seem to be faster than the GeForce 8400 and 8500, but usually slower than the 8600.

They're using early samples of the Radeon cards for some unknown reason, and they won't even run BioShock without crashing, bizarrely.

The overall consensus is that DX10 seems to hurt performace with some of those benchmarks seeing cards barely reaching 1FPS!

DX10 is like anything by microsoft, its overrated, overblown and you need a big hungry powersupply a even hungrier GPU just to say it looks a Little bit better then DX9. Not worth it in my view. Everyone is pushing DX10 now on the PC side because of $$$ but from what I have seen you end blowing large chunks of money for something that gives back very little.

It's a little early to judge DX10, but I think it'll be good really (other than requiring vista.. that'll put me off using it for quite some time!)

The thing so far is that the hardware isn't yet fast enough to really show much improvement, plus so few people have both vista and a top-end video card that it's not really worth spending time on making it work for the games companies. So what we see so far is more just a quick hack to show support in most cases.

However:

- it's a much better design than dx9, and games should have better performance under dx10 than dx9. This of course only applies if you go with the same effects and things - i.e. if you run the dx9 code.

- there are actually a lot of very cool things in dx10 that will make for some very good effects in a few years when the hardware and software catch up.

Give it a few years, and people will change their opinions I reckon (or perhaps everyone will make games under opengl - which would be better for us as thats what macs use.

I think you're eright about giving it a few years.

I think I'll stick with XP and DirectX 9 for the time being for gaming.

I still can't get over the fact everything struggles in those benchmarks aprt from £300+ cards.
