I have a new iMac and I'm running leopard on it. I ran bootcamp and installed windows XP 2002 on it. I've been trying to get a game (rome: total war gold edition) running and keep running in to snags.

The latest is that an error message pops up saying i don't have directX9 but I just installed all the drivers from the bootcamp CD.

Is it possible that I have directX 10 running because its a new iMac and is not backwards compatible? Is it safe to install directX9 just to play the game?

Or do I need to just go get directX9 from an another website? Should I re-install the game again?

Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

You have windows XP

Direct X 10 is not available for XP only Vista

Download and install DX9.c you should be grand to go.

Thanks a lot for the info!

Is the only way to get direct X 9 from that site? Is there any other site that doesn't require windows validation? My computer doesn't have internet hook up at home and i'll be downloading from a mac.

lots of the programs that require a certain version of directx (i.e. games) include an installer on the CD for that game.

Yeah, DirectX will update some DLL/OCX files on windows also config your VGA Card and change some settings the applications/games works better with them...

It doesn't work on OS X. OS X has OpenGL instead, which isn't nearly as good as Direct X but I doubt Microsoft is going to allow their graphics platform on anything other than Microsoft Products :p.

OpenGL 4.1 & DirectX 11 have pretty decent feature parity, plus OpenGL works on virtually every platform out there. But in terms of raw features, neither is really inferior to the other in any way.

there are still many games that support DX9. if you play console, the whole boxes support DX9 because of hardware limit. by the way, more than DX10 is only available for vista and windows 7. but this fact is all about eye candy. between DX10 and DX11 is not really different excepting few elements. in order to get DX11, you must have more than AMD HD 5000 or NVIDIA 400M.
