sorry if this is really basic mac stuff but i just can't work out how to disable the auto log-out. Each time I go back to my mac running High Sierra 10.13.6 it asks for my password to log back in again. I want to disable this.

Under  ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy, Require password in unchecked as is Disable automatic login. When I click Advanced, the Log out after XX minutes of activity is also unchecked.

Where am i going wrong?!

It sounds like auto login is what you are trying to accomplish? In addition to the S&P options you have unchecked, go to System>Prefs>Users & Groups>login options tab, and make sure that your user account is the one selected in the automatic login pulldown list.

Thanks for reply. My account is indeed the default automatic login so that's all correct as it should be. So what's causing me to get logged out all the time?!

Weird. I think I read somewhere that if you have file vault enabled auto login won't work. Maybe some 3rd party app is doing it. You might try booting into safe mode and then restarting. That clears a lot of caches and such.

Is this a computer that might be managed by a company or school?
It's also possible that what's happening is that what's known as the windowserver is crashing, which effectively will give you the impression that you've been logged out.
Also, are you sure that it's not just the screen locking, and that's asking you for a password to unlock it? You can check that in the Security and Privacy preference under "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" setting.

Yes, sure.
