disable "slide to unlock" but keep passcode lock?

Aren't these two features redundant? I have tried setting Autolock to "Never" but then the phone never turns off. I want it to simply lock with passcode after a short time. I shouldn't have to swipe to unlock and then enter a passcode - the swipe is an extra unnecessary step isn't it? Afterall, what are the chances that I will butt dial my passcode?

Am I thinking about this wrongly?

how would you bring up the passcode screen? wouldn't it conflict with the notifcaions on the screen? I think they have the "Slide to unlock" so that the passcode is not always intruding on the rest of the screen.

No you aren't, but there is no way to get rid of it without jailbreaking. At least not that I know of. I hate it, too.

Just don't leave your phone somewhere or have it stolen. Very easy to gain access if all they have to do is swipe the screen to use it, look at stuff.

The swipe is put in there to prevent bad things from happening. Same idea to swipe to power off.

Do you remember the times when people accidentally called you because something brushed up against their pants pocket?

Just how would you bring up the passcode screen anyway? If it's always up, then again bad things can happen. If you wanted to bring it up by simply tapping a specific section of your screen, bad things might still happen.

When I say bad things, I'm referring to unwanted actions.
Basically, it's all a way to make sure you aren't calling other people when you don't mean to, as well as unknowingly entering the wrong passcode which can lead to a device wipe (if you set it), etc.
