Yes yes its very nostalgic, but last night while trying, and failing to install Big Sur late at night, the startup chime gets real annoying real quick.

Is there any way to disable the startup chime?

Somewhere
system preferences>sound>sound effects. uncheck "play sound on startup"
Well in oneafour's instance the, inability to install Big Sur negates the uncheck in Sys. Pref. However, in the Catalina context, oneafour could simply 'jack' the speaker to mute' at least I had great success with that method, YMMV.

Go to Sounds Pane and untick underneath the slider Sound at startup. You know the original purpose for the chime is to tell you your hardware is OK before the OS loads. I welcomed it. Before Big Sur, my iMac didn't do it when I first received it last july, so I enabled it through a terminal command. When I had my late 2013 MBP, it had it by default.
