Hi, I currently have a cellphone plan with Rogers in Canada, and so I'm thinking about getting a hardware upgrade to the iPhone. I'll get to keep my current plan, which does not have a data plan. As I'm a university student for probably the next 7 years, I constantly have Wi-Fi wherever I go. Thus, I don't intend on buying one of Roger's horrible data plans.

I've also been hearing horror stories about people who don't have data plans and have been slammed by obscene bills because their iPhones wandered onto using Edge instead of Wi-Fi, perhaps when they were just walking around or perhaps when the Wi-Fi cut out.

Which brings me to my question; is it possible to disable EDGE on a new iPhone 3G with Rogers Canada? I looked at my friend's iPhone, and when I go Settings -> General -> Network, there is no EDGE menu. At most there is a 'data roaming' feature which I assume prevents you from downloading data while roaming outside of a Roger's network. Does anyone know of a way to disable EDGE so that I can only connect if I'm on a wireless network, without having to unlock/hack my iPhone? If that's not possible, what's the easiest/safest way to do so?

As I mentioned above, the Rogers iPhone has no 'EDGE' menu under 'Network', so there's no place to modify the server password etc.

Thanks

i got allot of crap from rogers for getting a voice plan (but it is possible..) because they said that my bill will be 1000+$ per month but i knew they just tried to scare me because they would make more money selling a data plan. anyway i called rogers 2ce(to make sure its true, you never know) and it is possible to get a data block on you iphone. this means that whenever you are out of a wifi hotspot it will disconnect and tell you that there is no place to connect to.

What was the number you called to get this data block? Thanks. I spent 30 minutes waiting for customer service to ask this question, and I ended up giving up. They have the worst 'please hold' music.

umm..it was the normal rogers 1800# ask for the iphone department then ask them to block your data

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

Just call 1-888-764-3771 (1-888-ROGERS1) and say Wireless and then Customer Service at the voice prompt, just tell them you want to have data disabled on your cellular service.

My friend just called Rogers iPhone support, and apparently although they can activate something to block EDGE, they don't actually know if it WORKS. How stupid is that? Also they said if you accidentally use your data, the best they can do is retroactively apply the $30 data plan to your bill. So if their own stuff doesn't work, YOU get hit with the charges.
