Disabling Sleep when plugged into AC

I often leave my Powerbook running all night if I'm downloading something big but would like to close the lid to stop anything disturbing it eg. pets, children etc.

How can I set it so it remains running when I close the lid? Can the Apple logo remain lit when I do this? It would make a nice night light

I'm fairly certain that Apple doesn't give you the option of what happens when you close the lid. That being said: Even if you could close the lid, as soon as you turn the display off, the "Apple" gets turned off as well. It is lit by the backlight for the LCD.

Also, as per the thread title, you can disable Sleep while plugged into the AC power by going to System Preferences > Energy Saver . Select "AC Adapter" from the pull-down menu. Then you can adjust the Sleep properties to "Never" while the operating on AC Power.

sure, but does it keep it on while the lid is closed?

i wish i could remember..grrr. i guess the only way to find out is to test..

No.

Closing the lid, and having the computer never sleep while connected to AC power are completely unrelated.

you're right, i think i read your post a little too quickly. so, it's possible to stop the computer from sleeping while connected to AC.

BUT, It's not possible to close the lid without sleeping. all clear. i hope

In my experience, this is the way it works.

Hmmm...thanks for the input but I'm not giving up.

I'm sure this is possible. You can do this on any other laptop manufacturer and I don't see what Apple would have to gain from preventing this.

I remember seeing a hilarious link on this forum to an iBook on ebay, where the seller was trying to convince everyone he had a finely tuned a Mac for ultimate performance. Most of his comments were BS but he did mention how he had managed this. Can't find the link though.

Maybe I can find something on Version Tracker.

You can make it so that your 'Book operates while the lid is closed. You just need to plug in another monitor. Then, when you close your PowerBook, the external becomes the default monitor. (Though it's useless without an external keyboard and mouse, as well.) [FYI, iBook users, click here ] However, when you do this, the internal display shuts off (I believe), and I don't believe Apple allows the screen to remain lit while the PB is closed/using external monitor.
