Disappearing admin account

Odd thing. 27" late 2012 iMac running OS 10.13.6 was going a bit slow. Did restart with fsck -fy, 'vol modified', so did it again, 'vol seems OK'. Restart,1st (admin) account slow to arrive and when it does the desktop icons don't resolve and all the application icons are missing. 2nd account, which I use for business, perfectly OK. Restart again with fsck -fy with repeat because 'vol modified' , now all reference the Account 1 missing although the files are visible on the Mac HD - users - 1st account route. Situation either simple or v bad; considered opinions welcome.

As an interesting, but I suppose obvious side-line on this, because I have lost the Admin element of the 1st account, it will not let me shut-down because it declines to recognise the name and pass word that it calls for when when shutting down.
