When I insert a disk in to my MBP the drive makes two clunking noises.. Does not sound smooth at all. Other then that it seems to work fine. Is this normal?

I would say it isn't normal. The difficulty is being sure of your interpretation of clunky. Mine makes a couple of noise as it is pulled in and locked. Also it makes a litte noise when reading, as would be expected.

I'll get my camera out and post a small video..

Little weird. I just returned my 2 week old MBP to the Apple Store today since the optical drive wouldn't burn any DVDs. I will just wait for the new ones to come out.

It sounds just like my iMac's drive. My Mac mini doesn't have that extra click though.

My bosses and mine make sounds very similar but nowhere near as loud as yours.. The 'clunks' that ours make aren't quite as drastic as the sounds in your video.

That's exactly how my macbook sounds. I don't know whether it's normal or not but it seems to be working just fine.

It sounds like the drive gets into a bind trying to load the disks. If that's the case it can't be good.

my c2d macbook has the same clunk
took it to apple and they replaced it
still had the same noise!
no problems using it ever and works perfectly fine
the price you pay for a cool look disk slot in a lappy!

I just purchased my MacBook a few days ago and was a little alarmed to hear that same sound. Mine sounds just like the video that was posted. Since one reader had their drive replaced and it still sounded that way, it makes me think that it should be OK. I would really like to know if other owners have the same clunk. Is it normal??

Yeah.. It's a bit of a worry of mine. I do have Apple care so I hope it if dose crap out.. It will be covered. Other then the noise it seems to function perfectly.

Eek! That doesn't sound good at all. I would have it checked if it were me. My iBook doesn't sound anything like that. Maybe it's OK, but that just seems wrong.

I just bought a MacBook Pro on Monday, and mine makes the exact same noise. I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do about it.
