Disc Drive not supported

I got a second hand Powermac today.. all is well except when I put a blank DVD in I get a message pop up saying 'The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. error code 0x80020025'
The drive then ejects.

DVDS are read fine same with cds.


In system profile I get:

Model PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D
Disc Burning: Not Supported

So any ideas how to get it working?

Does your new machine have 10.4.5 on it ? IIRC, that drive is supported in tiger.

Also have you tried Patchburn?

No the drive is capable.. it's a superdrive.

Could it be because i'm not running 10.4? I have 10.3.9 running on it..

Going to try a clean install of 10.3 tonight and if that doesnt work i'll get myself a copy of 10.5 tomorrow.

Don't waste your time with a clean install. It will work with 10.3.9 just fine. Someone already gave you the answer. Download Patchburn and run it. It will almost certainly fix your problem.

Well I went and bought Tiger and everything seems to be fine with that running now..

Strange it takes updates to get the thing working though.

Basically if the OS is older than the drive, then it doesn't know how to use it*. PatchBurn adds support for more drives.

*It's actually more complicated than this, it involves licensing and other reasons.

Patchburn 3.1.3

I just installed an NEC DVD-RW ND-3550A in OS 10.3.9 on my new PMG4 D.A., and the drive was not supported, blah blah blah. I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was after installing and running Patchburn 3.1.3, it changed all the text from System Profiler from English to Japanese, as shown in the attached picture.

I do plan on upgrading to Tiger, as soon as I get some time from my rather hectic schedule.

You may want to check some of your other settings as well since I've read on DVD forums that when Patchburn goes crazy or has an episode it tends to change other things as well. Hopefully this is not the case for you and only the language was affected. Good luck.
I have that same drive as I bought the LaCie FW burner so you could always try their site to get the drivers that you need to get it working (some others did this with their NEC burners and it worked but as always install at your own risk).
