Disc Utility strangeness

In Disc Utility, after running Verify Disc, I get the red message saying Disc Needs Repair -- but the Repair Disc button is grayed out. Can anyone explain?

You cant repair the disk you started up the computer with. Find the System CD/DVDs and boot up from them and then run Disk Utility.

You can't repair a disk you're booted from. Start up from the install discs supplied with your Mac, and run Disk Utility from there.

However, presuming you just posted from the Mac in question, do you have a backup? If not, get one before you do it! Just in case…

Riddle me this...

I just upgraded my Mac Mini to Leopard and updated it through 10.5.5. Now every time I open Disk Utility I get a pop-up message that reads, "Unable to checksum "Desktop". (Operation not supported on socket).

Can anyone please tell me how I can prevent this from popping up in the future. Thanks.

1.83ghz Intel Core Duo, and I also used the X-Slimmer to strip out the PowerPC binary code.
