Hello all,

yesterday I became the proud owner of a rev. 1 MacBook (Core Duo), my first Apple computer.

I am very, very satisfied with my purchase, I'm just getting the hang of OS X and have already loaded up my laptop with some nice programs and media (mp3's, videos etc.).

I do however have a question concerning a weird noise that my slot-loading dvd drive (a Matsushita UJ-8221) makes when I insert or eject a disc.

After searching the forum, I came upon this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/240315/

My slot-loading mechanism sounds almost the same, however in my case the 'whine' is more pronounced and the clicks less so.

Here is a recording of the noise my MB makes when I feed it a disc:

The recording is of very low quality, so its better to listen to with headphones or the volume all the way up.

On other forums, most people think the noise is normal for a slot-loading drive, and a thin one at that.

The first time I heard it, I almost panicked - the MB is so quiet overall, and the noise just doesn't sound right.

I've never had a slot loading drive on my previous computers, yet I do have a slot loading car stereo that is much quieter.

I'm a little bit scared of returning the MB to the store and asking for another one because I'm afraid of getting one with a different problem.

The MB I have now is actually my 2nd, the first one I bought I returned to the store to get it exchanged because of a dead pixel (i didn't have the opportunity to listen to its drive though).

What do you recommend I do? What do you make of the noise?

Also, I would be very, very grateful if other owner of MacBooks with Matsushita UJ-8221 drives would make recordings of their drives' slot-loading mechanisms and upload them so I can make a comparison.

Thanks in advance and a very happy new year to all!:)

As far as i can hear from your recording the drive sounds normal (compared to the 5 or so other MacBooks I've heard). Your car stereo, slot loader is much quieter because it has a lot more noise insulation around it. I too was worried when I first heard my drive, but it works fine. Enjoy your new MacBook! :)

cheers!

Thank you for your answer.

I think companies should mention noises considered to be normal in their products manuals...

The reason I was panicked by the noise is the local Apple dealer - Greece, among other things, is notorious for having the worst Apple dealer in the world...
