Hi,

I'm using two dell displays on my Mac Pro. The video card is giving it's power to both the screens. Is this also the matter when one of the screens is switched off or do I really have to disconnect the screen when I want to use just one? And if so is there a way to disconnect without really diving under neath the desk.

I tried switchresx but that doesn't seem to work.

When you turn one of the screens off, the system should recognize that. It should stop appearing in the 'Arrangement' tab in the Display preference panel and you should no longer be able to move your mouse off of your remaining screen and onto the unpowered screen. Is that not occurring?

In any case, the resources required to do basic GUI display on an extra screen aren't all that significant for a modern graphics card. What specific issue are you concerned about with respect to the graphics card "giving it's power to both the screens"?

That doesn't happen on my setup.

If my secondary NEC monitor is powered off, it still appears in the "Arrangement" tab, and any display windows which were last associated with that display, will continue to go to that display (which is off) when that app is launched. It also appears in "About My Mac" on the Displays tab. Only unplugging the video cable seems to totally eliminate it from the "useable" system.

Video card: EVGA GeForce GTX680
Monitor1: Dell U2713HM on DVI port output
Monitor2: NEC P241W on DisplayPort output
