Disconnected hard drive shows up on Disk Utility

I'm a recent Mac switcher. I connected my Maxtor external hard drive to my imac G5 to transfer some photos and my internet favorites.
It is no longer connected to my imac, but when I run disk utility it still shows up under Hard drives.

This isn't really a big deal, but I was just curious as to why it show up even though it is not connected.

Also, when I click on it, the eject button is not highlighted.

I accidently pulled out the plug before I ejected it. I know..i F'd up. I have since then restarted the Mac and it is still there.

I plugged the Maxtor back in, to see if ejecting it correctly would help.
When I plugged it in, a warning prompt came up, saying it had been removed incorrectly and that it could have been damaged and any info could have been lost or damaged.

I'm not so much worried about the Maxtor, I was using that for my PC, and I just recently got a Lacie for my Mac.

But could the Mac have gotten damaged too?

I can't believe I did that. I knew about ejecting devices too, but, forgot to do it that one time.

Oh, also, in Disk Utility, when I click on the Maxtor it is listed as an Internal drive, which is also very strange.

It won't have damaged anything on your Mac. It'll only damage files that were being modified on the external as it was being unplugged.

Is it now ejected properly? Does it still come up as an internal drive on subsequent attempts?

It is ejected properly now. But it still shows up there and it still says internal.

I connected it again, and when I do that the Maxtor icon is orange and white. While the one that won't go away is the silver icon, like the Macintosh HD icon.

I can unmount and eject the Maxtor orange and white icon, but the silver Maxtor icon, when I click on it, Eject and Unmount are not highlighted.

This might actually be an instance when repairing the permissions (in Disk Utility) and restarting could help. It's at least worth a try.

If that doesn't help, go into the Finder preferences, and under the Sidebar section, uncheck "Hard Drives," then check it again.

I tried it. Didn't work.

I also repaired permissions and rebooted. Still there.

As long as there is no harm to my Mac, I'm OK with it.

I just don't know why it is doing that.

At least now I know to make double sure I eject anything before disconnecting it.
