Discovery Channel Site Question

As a long time lurker in the this forum, I have a question for anyone who has an answer. I have done work in the past with HTML and some CSS, but have never gotten into AJAX, PHP, Rails, or anything of the like. On the front of DiscoveryChannel.com is a image of some kind, top-left just below the nav bar, does anyone know how to go about doing something like that? Any tutorials? I would greatly appreciate an info into doing something like it. I would like to stay way from flash, if possible.

Well they use Flash for it and that's likely the most direct solution. It could be done with fanciful JavaScript (not necessarily AJAX), though I don't know of any good tutorials off hand. It's kind of like a slide show running on auto-pilot. What parts of it would you want to reproduce? There's images changing, different links for different images, the transitions, a menu on it, etc. There's a lot of small little parts to it.

Ok, so it seems there is no way to stay away from flash. How would I go about creating the little control menu at the top corner?

Did you mean left or right side of the page? My browser probably block the stuffs since I don't see anything on the left, but I did see the transitional slidehow on the right.

If you're talking about the slideshow, maybe you can take a look at this example using YUI (javascript) as a start. It's actually more complex than the linked example, but it should give you some idea should you be interested in learning javascript.

We're just starting to learn that thing so we're not sure how to go about implementing it either...
