this is bizarre. my itunes library is listed as having 5944 songs while my ipod only has 5942. it is set to sync up every time its plugged in with the entire library (not just checked songs). anyone know why this might be or of a program that might tell me which songs my itunes library has that my ipod doesnt?

very minor but still aggravating.

do you perhaps have some purchased music? sometimes itunes doesn't transfer purchased music to the ipod if you arent authorised to play it.

maybe try setting it to manual update, and try dragging all your songs accross again. it may bring up an explanatory error msg for you..

I had the same problem - 3999 songs in iTunes, 3998 songs on my iPod. I eventually tracked it down to a compilation CD that had two versions of the same song, recorded at different times. When the CD was imported the files in the iTunes library on my HD were created as Big Party.mp3 and Big Party 1.mp3, even though both were listed in iTunes itself as Big Party. The iPod ignored Big Party 1.mp3 so I renamed it in iTunes to Big Party (version 2), synched the iPod and got both versions.

Try looking for duplicate song titles on the same album and see if that's your problem.

edit: BTW To find the missing song I sorted my iTunes library by song title and copy-and-pasted the entire song list into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, then did the same for the tracks on the iPod and pasted them in the next column on the spreadsheet and skimmed through until I got a mismatch in song titles - the missing song was just a couple of hundred songs from the bottom...

Any radio stations or .ogg files (anything that iTunes can't play standard) will cause them not to be synced to the iPod.

iTunes store previews

To add to the above, I've noticed if you have iTunes music store previews in your library/playlists (by just dragging the title into a playlist from the store) the ipod will not get the 0:30 preview tracks because you really don't own them, and they aren't on your HDD anyway.
