Disk Activity very audible

There is about 1.5 gb of read data and 500 mb of written data and ive only using safari and mail for 45 minutes. The HD continues to read/write while i type this, but im not doing anything else.

May be spotlight indexing activity although I have to say that sort of disk i/o behavior has not occured on the 2 machines I have recently owned. Is time-machine active?
