I have a dual workstation setup where I occasionally use my M1 Max MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with an ASD. I have a 4 TB SSD plugged into the ASD to minimize the number of cables I have to connect to my MBP when I bring it back to my desk.

The issue is that I'm getting the "disk not ejected properly" message every time I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the ASD—or at least every time I forget to eject the external SSD, which is most of the time!

Is there any workaround for this?

I get that. What I'm asking is if there's a workaround here. That disk contains my photos and it was always connected to my iMac Pro. I rarely had to eject it. Now, I am using a MacBook Pro as my single computer. I go back and forth between using it at my "desktop" workstation (attached to a dock and Apple Studio Display), and as a laptop.

The photos drive is attached to the Apple Studio Display. So, the issue occurs when I unplug my MBP from the dock and ASD to use it away from my desk. I try to remember to eject the photos disk first, but I often forget.

I thought I remembered an app that will automatically eject an external disk on sleep and remount it when reconnected. That might solve my problem. I searched around and found what I was thinking of—it's called Mountain.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's no longer supported.
