Disk Permissions Issue - HELP

I have an iMac " 24 and I'm trying to repair the Disc Permissions. I get an error stating: "The underlying task reported failure on exit" I get the same error when I verify as well. Any ideas as to what's going on.

This is due to file system damage Disk Utility cannot fix. At this point you have several options:

1. Invest in a program such as DiskWarrior, to try to fix your disk
2. Format the disk then restore from a backup
3. Replace the disk, if neither of the other two options work

In any case, back up NOW if you haven't already.
