Disk Space Issue

Hello,
When i go to finder and look at the Macintosh HD info (command I) It says that 418 GB's of my 500 GB HD have been used. This made no sense to me so I added up the sizes of all of the folders in the root directory of the Hard drive (Applications, Developer, Library, System, Users) including the hidden folders such as private and var and I got a total of 142 GB, which is much more reasonable. A scan with Daisydisk confirmed this. Any idea where these 270 somewhat gigs went?

Are you using any cloning software? I have noticed that when I use Carbon Copy Cloner and my target external disk is not available, it will sometimes write the cloned image to my internal hard drive.
 
same happens if you use time machine and instead of choosing a external as time machine backup disk select the internal , time machine then fills up the drive with backups until its full and then only deletes the oldest backup to make room for a new one

but you could look for all your hidden files and folders you might get a surprise depending what apps you use some bombard you with hidden files and folders ..and no dont just delete all hidden files and folders as OSX might get totally confused and wont find anything thats on your HDD, so think carefully before deleting
some forget that if you copy a file from one folder to another then the original still is there until you delete it
some create massive itunes libraries and never delete them when they create new ones , there are lots of ways to fill up a HDD
cant think of all now , some even forget to empty the trash, then there are log files that can fill up the entire hdd in a short time if they hang in a loop
