Disk Utility Count Not Verify HDD!!

Hello,

I was going to install XP on my MBP. I was partitioning the HDD using Boot Camp, and then I received an error saying that "disk cannot be partitioned because verification failed".

So I go to disk utility and click on "verify disk". It almost finishes when it comes up with the following: "First Aid Failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying HD because of following error: Thy underlying task reported failure on exit."

The in the status box, it says "Volume header needs minor repair. The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired".

But the "Repair Disk" is grayed out.. so I dont know what to do next.

Please help!

edit: I was able to verify and repair disk permissions.

You cannot Repair a drive you are booted from.

Reboot from the OSX installer DVD (hold down "C" key as you start up, and continue holding it until it boots from the DVD). Choose your languarge, and then under the Installer or the Utilities menu, launch Disk Utility.

To repair your disk, boot from your install/restore disk 1. If you don't know how to do so, insert the disk and shut down, turn the computer back on holding down the "c" key until you get the install/restore disk menu. Go into the finder bar at the top, click on utilities, and then open disk utility, you can then do whatever you need to.

Thanks a lot folks for the info.

So is this something serious? Pardon me if it is obvious, but would repairing the disk erase all the data (format the volume)? Thanks a lot again.

No, it happens sometimes. Your data should be fine, the header gets damaged every once and awhile, i've never had it on my boot drive, but on firewire drives, usually if I haven't ejected them and i pull the plug (accidentally, or power goes out, etc)..
