I have a MPB running 10.8.2. I have several external drives connected in a chain via Firewire 800 to the MBP. I use a NAS (WD) for my TimeMAchine backups.None of my external drives are targeted for a timemachine backing up.

Here is the issue: when TimeMachine is running, I can not access/use Disk Utility. It just displays a message saying 'Gathering disk information' and the only way to access the Disk Utility is to reboot the computer. (The only other way to get Disk Utility to respond is to do a FORCE QUIT.

Suggestions and thoughts about what is going on and possible fixes are appreciated.

Did you try to repair your disk permissions, try it once and check the disk status. I guess the problem is either you have upgraded your Mac or you have too many bad sectors in your drive.

Can be a firmware issue too with external drives. It hangs if the hardware isn't responding as expected. What does upgrading your Mac have to do with this?
