Hello everybody
Willing to format an external drive with Disk Utility, I mistakenly didn't select the fastest option.
The result is that Disk Utility started to work the disk 28hrs. ago and the status bar is slightly after the middle of the expected lenght for the completion of the procedure.
Now, since there's no "cancel" or "quit" command in the Disk Utility interface, is there any way to safely interrupt the formatting procedure??
Thanks to all

There is no way to stop normal format procedure safely. You would likely need to wait another 28 hrs.
Maybe I am wrong though.

now I don't have 10.11, but this has been true at least until 10.10 and as far back as I can remember as it relates to the security erase options, the is a button labelled "Skip". which cancels the overwrite and finalizes the format.

if that button is gone, then I have to wonder why Apple hates us.

you can also always force quit Disk Utility and then just format the disk again, the fast way.
