When running "Repair Permissions" in Disk Utility I receive the message:

Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool & cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.

Same message if comp started in Safe mode. Have tried many times with frequent restarts.

Comp: iBook G4
System: 10.3.9

Anybody got any clues?

Thanks in advance.

Have you cleared out the Receipts from your Library folder? If so, then that's your problem, Disk Utility uses that to check your current permissions against those set when the latest update was downloaded. If you've junked them, then they're not there to check against.

Okay then, try dragging iTunes and all associated files (not music files, just do a search for iTunes in Finder) to the Trash and try again. You don't have to delete them though.

If this does nothing, then try the same with the Chess application. :)

FWIW, this is quite a common 10.3.9 problem. :(

You could also try using a third party cleaning app like Xupport or Onyx to do the repair - not sure about Onyx, but Xupport will give you a readout of what it's doing as it does it, so you can see what files it had problems with if it stops

Prob solved ... here's how

Finally solved the problem (if anybody's interested). I connected the iBook to a network. Launched Disk Utility on a networked Mac and repaired the iBook's permissions using the remote computer's copy of Disk Utility. Just to make sure all was well I then repaired again using the iBook's copy of Disk Utility. Bingo!
