Disk Utility Issues

Hey there,

After updating to El Capitan, I noticed something a little odd when taking a look at the new Disk Utility layout. I just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same issue and if there was something I could do to fix the problem.

My MacBook Pro came with a 128 GB hard drive and has 89.14 GB of free space. However, when I pull up Disk Utility...it shows that "Apps" are currently taking up 82.69 GB. This is definitely not accurate. Here is a screenshot:

The amount of space Used and Available are still correct (30.96 gb and 89.14 gb). The only category that seems to be affected is the App section.

Has anyone else had this issue so far and is there a fix? Should I be concerned?

Nothing to be concerned about. It's a known problem and I wouldn't pay that much attention to it. If you need more accurate statistics, you should consider a third-party application like DaisyDisk.

That info comes from the Spotlight index and when the index is corrupted the numbers will be off.

Run the command below in Terminal to reindex Spotlight to fix it. But you can expect it to get screwed up again. This was always messed up in Yosemite and now with El Capitan it seems even worse. Or you could just ignore it.

sudo mdutil -E /
