I would recommend making a new thread. However, iPods don't support SMART status. That is normal. I would try restoring it in itunes.

but..

But just 4 days ago, it worked perfectly fine : same ipod, same computer. Someone just reloaded the comp and now this disk utility pops up everytime i connect it ..and lol how do i start a new thread :$ [im dum!]

Why??????????????????

As u know my problem , can u please help me out and tell me what to do now? i need to get back to transferring files onto my ipod from that computer. But the ipod icon does not appear at the desktop anymore. Instead the computer leaves me a message "the disk is not readable,[and then i have to choose from these:] 1)Validify.. 2)Ignore 3)Eject. The thing is "restoring the ipod on itunes" wont be possible because I will need a later version of itunes for that and the computer is such that the admin. has disallowed us members from installing/updating a prevalent software. at the same time, the other computer is working just fine with my ipod and I cross-checked, u were right S.M.A.R.T STATUS=NOT SUPPORTED EITHER WHICH WAY, but the hang up is that I need this one not the other computer for certain detailed reasons...

The computer on which the ipod worked just fine had the foll. info. on disk utility:
Name : Apple iPod Media
Type : Disk
Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : Apple iPod Media
Media Type : iPod
Connection Bus : USB
Connection Type : External
USB Serial Number : 000A27001550E9C9
Partition Type : FDisk_partition_scheme
Writable : Yes
Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
Location : External
Total Capacity : 74.3 GB (79,824,777,216 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
Disk Number : 1
Partition Number : 0
I think the one in which it is not working, the partition type is nil. I'll check again tomorrow but if u can figure out what it is thats blocked the comp. from recognizing/reading the disk it would be GREAT! thanks again..

First of all, if you just want your music from iTunes onto your iPod, you shouldn't even be using disk utililty whatsoever. Just restore it in iTunes and don't even open up disk utility to begin with. Maybe you messed something up while you were in there. It's meant for internal/external hard drives and not iPods.

You might have to use a different computer b/c iTunes would be the easiest way to do this.

But why is it not appearing on the desktop? Is there any way i can make it happen through changing the computer settings? I dont need to transfer music - i use that computer to download tv shows and then transfer on to my ipod but again, not directly onto itunes. I just transfer it to the ipod icon on the desktop usually and take it home to convert as i cannot convert on their computers [disallowed]
