I had exactly the same problem khollister, and it can be severe. chabig is incorrect. Worse than that, Disk Utility failed to successfully run First Aid on a connected (via dock) encrypted Time Machine drive.
In my case, I am on a MacBook Air M1 running a just installed macOS Monterey v12.1. I seriously wish I hadn't upgraded to 12 and waited until Apple got-the-bugs-out, which they have not. Discovering further odd problems with the OS, I decided to: (A) Dump the Disk Utility preferences. That didn't help. (B) Reinstall Monterey from Options: Recovery. (C) Let the OS sit around for awhile, sorting itself out. (D) Restart the OS to further help it sort itself out. That solved the problems entirely.
Summary: Reinstall Monterey. Let the file system simmer. Restart. See if that sorts out Disk Utiiity and other oddities.
