Disk Utility Software, Macbook and dead HD

I had an external hard drive fail and was wondering if there was any software out there that might save it. I have Disk Warrior but it doesn't work on the Intel Macs and they have no time table for providing a newer version. I also purchased Apple Care which comes with Tech Tool Deluxe which to my surprise can't be booted from on the Intel macs. Why ship software with a computer that won't work with it? Are there any options other than $3000 data recovery services to get my information off the external drive?

Data Rescue II works with the Intel. You can buy it online and download it. Can even make a bootable CD from it if you have a working computer.

Data Rescue still wouldn't mount the drive. Would my best shot be to try and recover the deleted files from the other hard drives that I sent to the failed drive? Is Data Rescue the best software for that?
