Disk Utility stalls from start up DVD disk?

Has anyone experienced this or can confirm this problem:

On my Mac Pro 2.66 with single Superdrive (Optiarc AD-7170A), I can boot from the original Tiger OX Install disk one, no porblem. But I cannot seem to sucessfully run Disk Utility from the DVD. When I Launch Disk Utility from the DVD, the application opens and I get an eternal beachball. The DVD drive whirs up a short bit, then goes quiet. The only way out is to powerdown with the front power button. I don't imagine you can force quit. I only have one hard drive -- the stock 250GB WD2500AAJS

On the other hand, Disk Utility launches fine from the hard drive itself -- although "Verify Disk" does take about a minute to process when inspecting my hard drive. Could it be it's just taking a REALLY long time when running from the startup DVD?

Please note what DVD drive you have if things work fine for you

I don't have experience with this exact computer but booting from the DVD is always a little laggy. Plus, verifying from the drive is usually a little slow too so there's probably nothing to worry about there. However, check your OSX disc to make sure it's not scratched or anything and then maybe try it again overnight. It won't need that much time but you may as well give it a while, just to make sure it's not merely a slow disc.

Yeah, my gut tells me it just may be a slowness issue. I gave it about 3-4 minutes, then worried about the beach ball. Maybe I'll try it again with more time!

i've had the same problem with a dirty dvd before. washed it off, and all was well.

Yeah, definitely give it more than 3-4 minutes. Good luck. I hope it's not a dodgy disc although Apple's pretty good about replacing them.

I'm going to try my friend's disk too and see if that's any different. I probably just panicked at the beach ball and longer than usual wait time with no disk activity to be heard

Unless your friend has an identical computer, the discs probably won't work.
