ran a verify of my hard drive, and it came up with 1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair"

how do i repair this?

Boot from the OSX discs and run Disk Utility from there since you can't repair the booted volume. The repair butotn should not be greyed out when booted from the OSX discs. Alternatively, run fsck from Single User mode if the discs are currently unavailable. :)
