Here is DiskWarrior 5.3.1 in action running on my M1 MacBook Air [12.6.5 Monterey] after it finished rebuilding the directory of an external Transcend SSD formatted Mac OS Extended [Journaled]. DiskWarrior 5.3.1 is now compatible with Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion through macOS 13 Ventura but currently it still not able to rebuild APFS formatted disks.

This has been the situation for some years, because Apple have not released enough info for the third parties to rebuild an APFS directory. At least Alsoft/Diskwarrior are up front about it. Micromat/Techtool say they are compatible with APFS, but use the same fsck routine that macOS Disk Utility First Aid does.

Techtool does have other features which may justify its price, but directory rebuild was the main one for me when I used to buy it before APFS.

I predict we'll be waiting for a LONG time before we see a DiskWarrior version that can handle APFS as well as HFS+...

Alsoft said they are now actively working on v6.0 since Apple has released enough of the code. It might take time but I don't think we will be waiting forever now. At least we are no longer waiting for Apple, as everyone has for all these years! That was ridiculous. Can't wait for DiskWarrior v6! Then I will feel a lot safer about using APFS. Until that day comes, I am sticking to purely HFS+, except for modern boot drives that must have APFS. My data lives on HFS+ for now.
