Hello. I am having issues playing Disney+ on Safari 14.0.3, (macOS 11.2.2) which is currently my only browser. The issue involves my Disney+ Safari tab getting a lot of data on just 1 or 2 minutes, reaching 7,29GB, and then, the tab refreshes, and the movie starts from the beginning. This every 1 to 2 minutes, ad infinitum, with movies like G-Force (yeah, the movie with spy-hamsters that shoot guns).

I don't know what's wrong with Big Sur RAM management. This is not an M1 chip mac, mind you. This is an Intel Mac mini. At this point, I'm not sure wether this is a macOS issue, or a Disney+ problem. I called Disney+ and left the feedback, anyways.

Ok, I just discovered what's behind this issues: The content blocker, Wipr.
Once I had disabled it, Disney+ started to behave correctly on Safari.
I will get in touch with Giorgio to inform him about this issue.

Had the same issue last week and then again two hours ago. Got the message in Safari Technology Preview as well, but at least the site wasn't reloading shortly after I clicked the message away like it happened with Safari. Almost punched the wall. Got Wipr active on both.

Weird. My old 2014 MBP runs D+ fine. Admittedly I didn't play the entire movie but 1.9GB after 20 minutes doesnt seem excessive to me. Then again, I'm not running a separate monitor like the OP's Mini, just my laptop's 13" screen.

Yes, watching on an external Screen as well. I wouldn't care about the RAM usage, because I'm streaming a 4K movie and the data has to sit somewhere.

What I don't like is Safari nagging me with a stupid message and then forcing the site to reload. It has been talked about a lot and I luckily don't have that problem very often, but other browsers don't do that and just eat the RAM while doing their job.

It's especially frustrating because it's Disney+(Apple) and I naively expect Safari(Apple) to play nice with it. 😆

As I state on the title, this happens on a 2014 Intel mac mini.

Honestly the best option would be a native app, for streaming services just like Spotify or AppleTV, for services like Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+

Have you found another alternatives Adblock that don’t cause problems like this? After reading your comment I replaced AdGuard with Adblock Plus extension and then 1Blocker and all of them still causing unwanted Safari tabs reloaded. At this point don’t know what Adblock to get...

Hi,

Were you able to get in contact with Wipr developer Giorgio to get this issue fixed? Hopefully you did and he can find solution to it or something! This unwanted Safari reloaded is driving me crazy! Thanks!

Dear mango, dear community. I didn't receive a response from Giorgio, which is a bit strange, but I'm not expecting one because I suspect this is an issue of Safari 14 on Big Sur. Maybe it's the way it handles the new codecs (on Big Sur, Safari is using more codecs such as VP9), or who knows, a bug on the browser itself.

I say this because, since I disabled Wipr on Disney+, I had this same issue again and again, sometimes showing the warning, some other times just refreshing the entire tab every 2 minutes, which prevented me from watching 2002 Solaris movie (recommended, although some say the Tarkovsky version is better, I still have to watch that one). My solution was to download Firefox, and watch Disney+ on Firefox. Anyways, I like to have a secondary browser, and I was hesitant between Firefox, Brave, or Edge. Either of those should work fine. But it is a bit sad Safari is having this issues.

Anyone willing to share their experience is welcome to contribute on this thread.

Ok. Giorgio replied to the email, reminding me that he doesn’t answer bug reports through email, that I should follow the instructions listed here: https://giorgiocalderolla.com/support.html

However, now that I know that this is not related to the content blocker, I won’t bother him with this.
I contacted Disney+ instead, to leave feedback about this.

I have seen this issue on my MBA M1 and my wife’s MBA (intel). I have Wipr on my phone but not our laptops so I don’t believe this is due to Wipr. I think the title should remove Intel. It’s definitely not exclusive to those machines.
