Can anyone comment on the display brightness difference in a way that a 1.5GHz Powerbook 15" user (me) could related to? I know that they're both going to be brighter than than my current powerbook, but roughly how much brighter? Is "half the bars" equal to the powerbook? How much brighter is the 15" LED than the 17" or are they the same? Thanks.

From what I've read...the MBP's are about twice as bright as PB's. So yes, half the bars would be what a PB is. I currently don't have a MBP, but helped 2 friends get MBP's and would say this is true. Personally I can't comment on the LED, but from what I've read around here, LED is brighter then regular MBP screens.

Thanks for the info. I can't decide between the 17" HD and 15" LED, so hearing that it'll be twice as bright regardless is swaying me towards the 17" :)

Since it's not LED, I'm asusming the 17" backlight is the same as in the previous revision of the 17MBP ... do you know if there's any known issues with that? (dark band at the bottom, etc)

I beleive there are issues with previous 17 inch...That's where LED comes in, LED eliminates these types of problems. And just to calrify, from what I've read, the LED will be brighter then the 17

15" Led & 17" Led

I just purchased a 15" LED MacBook yesterday, and for starters, the display is immaculate and incredible. The Brightness of the screen is a bit improved but the best part is the responsiveness and the contrast ratio greatly increased. The earlier MBP have a sort of "grainy" or "sparkley" look which did make the screen brighter but the spectrum was a bit off compared to the last Powerbook (which was my last computer). Also a huge improvement is the viewing angle! With the LED, it seems like the screens are as good (or better) than desktop LCD screens. So if you're just comparing screens, definitely the screen is the new MBP greatest improvement.

TTT for answers :). I'm in almost the same situation. Would like to buy online now, but it seems like I have to wait for the stores in Denmark to get the new Macbook Pro's home before I can decide what to buy

I haven't seen the new LED versions, but I've had both the 15 and 17 MBPs. the previous 17" are not quite as bright as the 15" but, IMO, a much higher quality display. I assume the LED ones will continue to be brighter than the 17 - if apple had increased the brightness on the 17 they would have announced it.

The manufacturer spec it as 16ms, not that that means everything but probably "not very fast".

The manufacturer spec viewing angle as 120/110 degrees, how can that be an improvement? What did the old one had? Do you have glossy or not? I don't know for which one those numbers are, if they differ.

No way it's as good or better than a GOOD desktop LCD screen, might be as good as a ****** one thought.

If you don't care much about size and price 17" with 1920x1200 might be sweet, 77% more space for your apps (in pixels.) is almost an entire screen more.

What do you mean by the 17" being a higher quality display? Was it the graininess thing that I've heard mentioned for the 15"ers?

People may not agree, but my eyes are good and I'm particular with these things. Yes, the 15" had the grain, which is just another word for excessive anitglare coating that makes everythin appear as if covered in dust, a little blurred and sparkling. Compared to most PC laptop displays I've seen recently, the MBP display was terrible in this regard. The 17" was very comfortable to use, had none of the grain issue and slightly better viewing angles. It was a little unevenly illuminated, but acceptable as a whole.

Tomorrow I'll get my new 15" and will report back if the grain has been fixed. I suspect it has.

Just read that too. Looks like I'm going to order the 17'' Hi rez

Yeah, it looks like the real benefity of the LED display is battery life and warmup time. To be honest, I'm never away from a power source for more than an hour, and I can spare the 10 seconds it takes for a standard LCD to warm up, so I'm probably gonna go for the high res 17" too. Though I'd still like to see it in action first...

Please do, look forward to hearing more from your expert eyes :D

The Apple Store I was at last night indicated that they had them in stock but they haven't put them on the floor for display yet.

That happened to me on Tuesday. I went back today and they were out for display. :D

With the new 15" and 17" side by side they looked pretty identical in display brightness. I think it's possible Apple limited the brightness of the LED display so it doesn't show up their flagship 17" model. :apple:

If someone has specs on the screens from the manufacturer I'd be interested to see. :)
