I need some advice on how to properly take care of my mbp when connected to an external display. I have a VGA 17" Dell LCD that i use for extra screen real estate.

1. Is it ok to use both for extended periods of time?
2. When i want to just use the laptop can i just shut the monitor off and leave it connected?
3. When should i connect/disconnect the monitor(while the macbook pro is shutdown? Sleeping?)
4. Any additional precautions i should take?

Sorry if this seems overy concerned I just want to make sure my MBP doesnt suffer any harm because of something i really dont need. TIA.

I think you're probably worrying too much. Both devices will be fine, although I guess it'd be a good idea to disconnect/unplug the display when not in use, if only so that if one device is knocked or damaged, it's less likely to affect the other device. :)
