I need some advice on how to properly take care of my mbp when connected to an external display. I have a VGA 17" Dell LCD that i use for extra screen real estate.

1. Is it ok to use both for extended periods of time?
2. When i want to just use the laptop can i just shut the monitor off and leave it connected?
3. When should i connect/disconnect the monitor(while the macbook pro is shutdown? Sleeping?)
4. Any additional precautions i should take?

Sorry if this seems overy concerned I just want to make sure my MBP doesnt suffer any harm because of something i really dont need. TIA.

I think you're probably worrying too much. Both devices will be fine, although I guess it'd be a good idea to disconnect/unplug the display when not in use, if only so that if one device is knocked or damaged, it's less likely to affect the other device.

Just use it the way you normally use a monitor.
