Hi all,

I've got an iMac 27" 5K late 2015 (4GHz 16GB 512GB M395 2GB) and am waiting for MBP 15" late 2016 (2.9GHz 16GB 512GB 455 2GB) to arrive. I need a display suitable for both of them, and I would even say the iMac in the first place and then the MBP.

Before Apple discounted LG UltraFine 5K my main choice would've been Dell P2715Q as I cannot afford to buy Dell UP2715K now.

Now that Apple discounted LG UltraFine 5K I'm in front of a tough choice. On one hand there is a semi-professional calibrated 4K Dell display which has all the inputs you'd want, which is 100% compatible both with the iMac and the MBP. On the other hand there is a consumer 5K P3 wide colour LG display (which is very similar to the iMac's internal one)... which might not work with iMac at all or even if it works it's 99% that one would have to scale down the resolution back to 4K - it would be ugly I assume. However I will be able to use it fully with the MBP though it'd be rare...

What would you do and why? I need to trigger the purchase quite soon.

P. S. Design does not matter to me in this case i. e. I don't care if LG is ugly or not. :)

It is said to support Thunderbolt 3 only. Your iMac doesn't have it. TB2 incorporates DisplayPort 1.2, which doesn't support 5K.

Well, the UP2715K is just about $100 more expensive than the LG Ultrafine 5k ($1,099 [newegg] vs $974) - is it really that large a gap?

The UP2715K goes for approx 1000 EUR in Europe too, oftentimes under 900EUR brand new from retailers.

You could go with the LG Ultrafine 4K - it offers P3 and will work with the MBP via TB3 and the iMac 5K via a TB3 to TB2 adapter. It's also seen a price cut to $524.

If only it'd be 27", I'd do it in an instant. 21.5" is too small. :(
