I use a MacBook Air 2022. I read it has a screen brightness of 500 NITS.
I work with documents, copy and text.

I have purchased 2 external displays (portable) which run off USB C only (power and data from the MBA).
Unfortunately both of these displays have give me a migraine .... so Ive returned them over the last month.

I seriously believed apple Mac screens are the only ones for me, as they just seem to work and not strain my eyes. I even used a 10 year old MBP for a day, and think it is better than any LG or curved display Ive used in the last year.

A few possible solutions I want to explore, yet don't know what's possible...

Can I buy another MBA or MBP and use this as a second (extended) display, via a usb C cable?

Could someone point me towards an apple display 26 or 27 inch or similar, which could suit my MBA 2022? I was ideally wanting to try and pick something up 2nd hand that was a few years old and could use some advice.

Can anyone recommend a really good portable display - which would be similar a Mac? (may not exist??)

thanks in advance

Jimmy

No, you cannot connect Mac to Mac like the old Target Display Mode, which is very unfortunate.

Universal control does allow you to use a second Mac as an extended display when you use the same AppleID on both. You have to fiddle around with the settings in the Displays section of System Settings. It works very well if you are using it for reference materials. It’s not as great with audio/video.

That said, using two Macs side by side via UC takes some getting used to, but can be useful depending on your workflow. You can copy/paste between the machines but can’t drag windows between them unless one is in extended display mode. I worked this way for about a year and then picked up an M1 mini and 32” 4k dispkay.

I think UC is a very underrated feature (many seem biased toward something like Target Display Mode).

About the only display that meets your requirements is the Apple Studio Display. A much cheaper solution may be to pick up a used/‘refurbished’ Thunderbolt Display. You’ll give up retina resolution, but have something at least as nice as that old MBP.

Well… you “sort of” can, by using AirPlay to Mac. But I would not buy a Mac with the goal of using it that way.
