I hope someone here has an idea, because Apple doesn't have a clue after many, many hours on phone with tech support.
I recently purchased the i7 2012 mini. Hooked it up through HDMI to my 32" 720p TV. The picture is absolute crap. very pixelated, no smoothing, washed-out colors, just generally completely unusable.
Have gone through all sorts of settings adjustments in Display Preferences and TV settings, but to no avail. reset pram and every other adjustment, update, etc. that i or Apple could think of.
exchanged for another mini, thinking it might be a bad graphics card. Same issue.
went to Best Buy and spent an hour trying different tv's and even another mac mini (i5), but same result every time. Unusable at 720p.
now here's the really odd thing: my 2008 MB, hooked up to same TV with a mini-DP to HDMI adapter looks great. Almost as good as the built-in LCD. My 2011 Dell from work, hooked up through HDMI looks great on that TV. So, I don't think it's a problem with 720p. All 3 computers (mini, MB, Dell) display at same resolution 1360x768.
I've hooked the mini up to a 1080p TV and it is much, much better, but still not as clean as the old MB is on the 720p TV.
Is there a simple setting we're missing, or are you aware of any specific limitations of the 2012 mini and 720p output?
The Apple service advisor has passed this issue up to engineering and is hoping for a response in a few days. Maybe an issue with the graphics card, maybe a firmware update needed, maybe its just me?
Any ideas?
