Hi there,

Probably as many this is kind of my last resort for figuring out this strange problem with my mac.

Model:
Macbook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)
OS X Yosemite
Processor: 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk Macintosh HD
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

This is how my problem begun:

After connecting my Mac to my Samsung Smart TV through a HDMI Cable I watched a movie on the TV. When I was done I disconnected the HDMI Cable and the computer went back to his original settings of displaying and behaved normally.

After I rebooted, the Mac started normally (intro sound, little fan noise and working caps-lock), however the display screen gave no image, except in the beginning the apple logo, but now it even doesn’t do that anymore. I thought my screen was broken.

Then I worked my way back through the process and connected the HDMI cable and still got no display on either the External or the Internal display. So I closed my Mac and opened it again while pulling out the HDMI Cable at the same time and the screen got back to life. Only the cable isn’t enough; it must be connected to the TV for this ‘trick’ to work. After rebooting I have to repeat this procedure.

When it is connected to the TV the TV says it’s connected but gets no signal and my Mac doesn’t recognize anything, even when I hit the Detect displays button in System Preference/Displays.

It seems like my screen gets stuck between the Internal and External display, but I have no idea why.

Things I’ve tried:

  • Resetting SMC and PRAM
  • Rebooting in SafeMode
  • Trying different screen resolutions

I hope somebody can help, I can’t find similar problems on the Internet. The solutions now would be to bring a TV and a HDMI cable all the time to regain access to my screen; this is not a really good solution I guess... Thanks!

Thanks for your answer. I've been to an Apple store and have been on the chat with Apple. My Mac is just over the 4 years that Apple gives as boundry for this problem you mention. On the chat they said that I could not get the free of charge repair, because of that.

In the shop they couldn't read out if it was that problem with the graphics card, because they couldn't get it to boot in this particular setting, they told me to replace the motherboard which contains the graphics, which would cost around 800 euros.

So that's why I'm looking for another solution, also because the screen hasn't stopped working, it just behaves differently/strange. Any other idea's?

It does sound a bit like the video issues that are covered under the programme that was linked to.

There isn't a four year limit. The programme covers the issue until the end of this year OR 4 years from purchase, whichever provides longer coverage for you. It's stated quite plainly at the end of the page. It seems you spoke with someone who didn't know what they were talking about.

But the diagnostics of it is, of course, up to Apple and their testing methods.
I'd try again, and mention specifically that you would like your machine tested for this issue covered under the extended repair programme.

Hi JTToft,

Thanks for your reply. You're right about the limit, thanks for the notice. I made an appointment for tuesday at the geniusbar. Hope they can figure out what's wrong.

I'll reply afterwards what they've told me.

If someone had something similar to this problem, I like to hear your story and solution.

- You're most welcome. I look forward to hearing about your results.
I haven't heard of too many people having Retina models in for this issue. 2011s are notorious for it - mine has been repaired twice now.

So I went to the Geniusbar of apple and the diagnose was; either my motherboard is broken and has to be replaced or my display is broken and has to be replaced. Estimated cost between 500 and 900 euros. They took the mac outback, so I don't really know what or how they checked it, so I can't give any specifics.

I'm visiting another repair service (non-official apple servicepoint with excelent reviews) this morning for a second opinion.

Meanwhile, I'm open for other solutions, thanks!

Went to the non-apple repairservice. The guy cleaned my whole mac and especially the logic board with, I guess, some ultrasonic cleaner. Why?; Because there could be some dust or dirt blocking the cirquit. This didn't help unfortunately.

Then he measured the electrical current on the board and figured out that the GPUchip or 1 of the 3 chips before the GPU is blocking the power, it would be a lot of work for him to figure out which one precisely, with no pay because he is only diagnosing.

So he figured out that it is not the display and that the problem is on the logic board somewhere near the GPUchip or the GPUchip itself. He said that he had never seen this problem before and that it is a very uncommon and unique problem, so I'm very unlucky. The only solution that he could give is replacing the logicboard for 1000 euros.

When I got home and booted up my mac it started up normally with display for onetime and then crashed immediatly. Giving this panic report:

After rebooting it went back to it's 'normal' behaviour and I have to do the HDMI trick again.

I'm no expert in this kind of things and I have no idea how to read this panic-report. Somebody else has any idea? Or maybe even a solution after reading all this... Thanks!
