This is what I'm looking to do. In my living room which does not have a TV, I'm going to purchase a new receiver, speakers... I have my mini server in my family room with itunes...

In my living room I would like to use my new AppleTV for music only. I can easily connect it to my receiver via optical and use an iphone as the remote (since no tv for navigation) but I would like to see if I can buy a very small display with HDMI and have this sit on top of my receiver so that I can use the appletv remote to navigate itunes... I'm not going to watch movies. I've found some 7" LCD displays with HDMI that appear to be used for connecting to cameras or for cars. I've found a few for around $200.

So my question is, how low of a resolution and screen size can I go that will work with AppleTV and is still usable. For example here's one that I've found that lists resolutions of...

Supports MAX 1080p ( 1920*1080p ) and 1080i( 1920*1080i)
Compatible with Devices with HDMI or mini HDMI output
such as Canon 5D mark II,Canon 7D,Nikon D300S and D3S
and so on .

Note that displays of all sizes will list "compatible" resolutions but the important resolution is the native resolution. In this case the Lilliput LCD has a native resolution of 800*480 (480p).

I don't see a way to lower the output resolution on the ATV2 so your little TV will take the 720p and convert it to its native 480p. The net result is that it will be pretty small but you'll also be pretty close to the thing, right?

Do you have an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad? I use the Remote app in those devices to control my headless ATV1 on my stereo and it works GREAT. I never even have to plug in a display at all.

Re Display/TV - how small can I go?

Thanks hualon

I'll see what the return policy and give it a shot. Might be pretty small but as you said, I'm going to be standing right on top of it.

As for using iphone/ipad as a remote, I do have both my wife doesn't tend to carry hers around while in the house so I'll end up having to go find her phone for her:)

I'll also see if I can find another display and check the native resolution and possibly go up another size to make this a bit more readable. I like the idea of displaying the album art...

Just found that they also offer a touch screen version. I don't suppose that would work with AppleTV though.

With the current software, the ATV2 is able to output at 480p. It even states the output resolution in Settings under "About" now.

Thanks newagemac

I'll give this a try and post how it all goes.
