Haven't been able to find any info in a search.

I've just noticed that my display will not sleep, it just stays on screensaver. Tried resetting the enery saver to default and various other settings but nothing works. It's driving me nuts.

You might try resetting the SMC...here is an Apple article on how to do so and what it does:

Yes that did the trick, thanks.

I never heard about a reset that worked simply by unplugging the power cord.
