displaying Chinese in VLC

I have a .srt file that looks like this.

I've tried all of the TextEdit file open settings and even the well known online converter but the subtitles are still garbled. It's Simplified Chinese and I just want it to display the Chinese subtitles in VLC.

I never have this problem with Korean and Japanese. Only Chinese. Any permanent solutions?

in your case, the subtitles you provided appear to be encoded using GB- 2312. You'll need to use something that can correctly display GB2312, and paste it it into a text editor that can save as UTF-8

I don't know any Chinese, though, so you may wish to check that what I quoted is actually correct.

Thanks. Safari fix is a good trick.Those subs were actually garbage so I grabbed another version.

NB. I don't know why VLC's own coder doesn't work. It allows you to set the encoding just like Safari.
