Displaying notifications: AOD vs. Raise to wake

I think Samsung has done a better job with displaying notifications than Apple. It isn't a big issue but something that is better on the current Samsung flagships, in my opinion.

With Samsung's Always on Display, you dont even have to touch the phone to see if you've got a new email or missed call.

I agree, as a defector from the Note 7 to the iPhone 7 plus I VERY much miss AOD. Very useful feature. I'm sure Apple will do something for the iPhone 8 if it does indeed have an AMOLED display.

Motorola actually did a better job than either of them and they did it first ..... Sadly it looks like Motorola patented the interactive aspect of its Moto Display, I would love Samsung to copy it so that the AOD was interactive and gave far more functionality, but it looks like that will be Moto for time being ...

No they are not actionable in the way of Moto unfortunately..

While the note 7 screen is off with AOD on, if you eject your s-pen, you can write on the screen. Then you can pin it to the screen and there is a notification icon that you can double tap to show or hide what you just wrote. Is this something like what you guys mean?

No. That's just lock screen memo, as cool as it is.

If we just look at Always on display comparing it to Nexus 6p and Moto Active Display.

Neither. I didn't find it particularly useful on my s7 edge. In the end I just had a picture as my AOD. So far I'm not that enamoured with the raise to wake on IOS 10 as I always forget to use it and just click the power button and put my finger on the home button and then I'm in.

AOD is better on the Note 7 and might be more useful.

I think I can live with that, but I wish Samsung put more things on the AOD. They should just put full notifications on there, this way I don't even have to turn on my phone unless I want to take action. With that said I really miss AOD, since I'm on an iPhone now.

I had my iP7 Plus for only a couple hours, and I already think I'll be turing it off. Seems okay when you are home, but not when your out and about.

With the Note 7 you can double tap on notifications on the AOD to open them which is pretty useful. On the s7 and s7 edge there was nothing useful you could do with the AOD except look at the time and check battery percentage and it would give you the number of missed messages you have.

I think it's nice to have but it's not always necessary. The regular iphone 7 has a small battery so something like the AOD would crush it's battery life. Raise to wake is a decent substitute for saving battery life.

I agree, my stand sits perfectly on my desk so when I double tap a notification, the iris scanner lines up perfectly to open my phone.

I just found out you can add your own photo to AOD when I got my replacement N7. Don't know if it always existed or came with the update.

That functions merely as a shortcut and opens up the specific app on the device after prompting you to unlock.

It is not actually interactive and actionable within the lock screen itself whilst the device remains locked. There is a big difference.

True, with the exception of having the Iris scanner enabled. With the Iris scanner enabled, it unlocks and goes straight to the app. You won't even see the lock screen or notice the Iris scanner.

It doesn't prompt you to swipe up after double tapping ? So that could actually be a quicker way then of getting past the press home or power, swipe up and unlock via Iris to do it via AOD instead.

It's still not same as being able to actually see your notifications on the lower power display mode and preview them without unlocking. I'm sure Moto likely patented it's way of interacting with its action display hence we haven't seen other companies implement the feature in the same way. It's just a shame that device wise since Lenovo took over has meant I have no interest in buying a Moto device as is despite genuinely liking their software take since the Moto X.

Nope, No prompts, Goes straight to the app.

As long as you're in decent conditions for the Iris scanner to work quickly, then it happens lighting fast.

For me personally I love the raise to wake on my 7+ and the way it lets me interact with the notifications. It is so fast and easy to reply to texts this way.

The 7+ raise to wake wasn't bad at all, what bothered me was I didn't need the screen to turn on every single time I slightly jostled the phone. With music playback controls it was a pita as I constantly found myself hitting music controls when I didn't want to.
