Decided to make a post about this because I havent really seen it answered anywhere. Alot of my tv shows and movies are already on my computer and encoded as avi's with divx or xvid, the usual. I would like to put these on my phone but of course the format needs to be changed to h264. Is there any software that I can do this with? I noticed that handbrake only does DVD to h264 and I believe the same goes for quicktime. Any help would be appreciated.

People seem to like something called videora. It uses ffmpeg underneath it, so the results should be very similar to a lot of the OS X programs.

I keep using mpeg streamclip as well but for some reason I can't get what I want... I wanted to bring down the file size to 250 mb, but every time I do that the quality goes down so badly that it is impossible to get watchable quality. I am talking you can't even make out the faces. Its completely blurred...
And then I keep having problems with handbrake. I say convert my VOB files to a MP4 or a Quicktime file. So it starts and finishes, but when I look at the file size it says 698 or so. I click limit file size to 250, but still have no luck...

I've found much better results if you decide how low you can stand the video frames (I usually go with 24) and audio (I usually go with 96 kbps @ 22Hz). Also set the overall kbps (I usually go with around 600). Movies usually end up anywhere from 450 MB to 650 MB. Your 250 MB might be an unrealistic goal.

Well the whole reason I sought out 250 is because of reports on hear and people getting the 250 mb and it being watchable.
I have used the Videora to convert avi's with xviD to iphone and it worked good and the quality was very good also
videora actually has an iphone converter that works great so you dont have to use the video ipod one.

Not sure if you have a pc or a mac... I have a mac and I use mactheripper to rip off the dvd to my hd (movie extraction only). I then use visualhub in the iphone present and set the file size to 300mb. That is very watchable. It looks great on my ipod and looks fine on my mbp. That is the best converter for small file size that I've found. I use the same dvd with handbrake using a small bitrate and it turns out extremely pixilated. For PC, videodera or imtoo software seems to be popular.
