hello everyone

My friend has had a mac for a while now and he just started trying to download movies.. does anyone have/use this program???

when he downloaded a movie it said it wouldnt work and that he needed to download DivX. Where can he get this program and will it work with QuickTime to play movies?

Mplayer from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html

or VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I wouldn't go for the Quicktime codec, but you can get many different kinds like FFmpeg, but here is the divx.com one. http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

I suggest Mplayer.

If the codec is already in the foler "Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime" then go ahead and try to play it in qt. If it doesn't work try playing the movie in VLC

The DivX codec from DivX.com an installer, that once downloaded starts straight away. So you READ and press Next a few times?

You really need QuickTime Pro to enjoy DivX video in full screen.

If the video you downloaded isn't playing correct are you sure it is DivX? IMO you need a few components to get any real use out of QuickTime Pro I have the following installed here:

3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX
AC3 Codec
Apples MPEG2 component
DivX 6 Decoder/Encoder
EyeTV MPEG Support.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export/Import
OggVorbis.component
XVIDDelegate.component

The first one is illegal you wont get that answer here. You buy or rent DVDs from shops or online.

You can watch videos on OS X using MPlayer OS X, VLC, XinePlayer, or QuickTime Pro with the correct codecs installed. Google will provide you with links to all of these.

I told you what codecs I use above, Google will point you to all of them. divx.com is where you get DivX from which is also mentioned above by someone.

To install software you read the docs, or follow the instructions in the installer.

Tell your friend to read this thread carefully and he might be able to interpret the steps needed for this to work. It's pretty straight forward and he should be up and viewing in no time.

If you have a video file that is associated with quicktime all you do is click on the video file and it opens quicktime, you have no reason to do anything else. It sounds to me like you've completely confused yourself and maybe you should just download VLC which has all the codecs you need preinstalled and just associate your files with that.

Are you actually reading anything anyone is telling you here? We have a saying in the UNIX world it's RTFM and another STFW look them up they both fit here! There's another one PEBKAC but that's a bit rude no need to look that up.

QuickTime needs codecs installed to play video/audio that it can't out of the box.

VLC, MPlayer OS X, and XinePlayer are all media players that include the codecs that QuickTime doesn't by default, and a hell of a lot more.
