If I am watching a film / listening to music on my iPad and I put on the AirPods Max will they detect they are on my head and automatically switch the output to the headphones?

Conversely will the iPad switch back to speaker mode when I take them off my head? Or does this require manually disconnecting like normal Bluetooth headphones?

Most of the times, yes it connects automatically. Sometimes it will connect automatically but it will pause your movie/video

Everything is automatic and configurable head detection and/or auto-switching) with iOS/macOS devices.

It stays connected but re-routes playback to the originating device.
That’s perfect. The ability to switch from speaker to headphones and back again just by the headphones sensing when you are wearing them is a huge feature.
