Hey all!

Hope you're keeping well :)

My iPad Pro 10.5 has been developing white blotches near the home button. It's reached a point where the issue has become a real distraction in my day-to-day work and being outside of the warranty period, I feel the price of a replacement isn't worth it.

Instead, I'm going to upgrade to the Pro model. I feel the extra features over the iPad Air make sense for me as I do a lot of art and video editing. Between the 120Hz screen, quad-speakers and needing 128gb, I'm able to justify the price jump. The only question I have now is whether to go for the 11" or 12.9".

I use my iPad daily as a creation device for writing notes, sketching, editing videos and day-to-day organisation. I'm also usually at my desk or around the house so portability isn't as important to me as it would be for others. My impression is having the 12.9 would be more preferable in these instances but I'm not sure whether apps truly take advantage of the additional real estate. Would any iPad Pro 12.9 owners be able to share their experience and also potentially take screenshots of the following apps:

  • Apple Reminders
  • Affinity Designer
  • Bear (notes)
  • Luma fusion
  • Notability
  • Ferrite
  • Pocket Casts
  • Apple News
  • Pages
  • Keynote
  • Numbers
  • Apple Mail
  • Apple Calendar
I know the request around screenshots is a huge ask.

With appreciation,

I am honored to help Captain America find a new iPad. :p

I definitely think the iPad Pro would suit you well. It works great with the Apple Pencil due to its 120Hz screen. Go for it!

Some apps make use of more screen real estate and some don’t. The larger iPad is certainly a cool option to consider. If work wouldn’t ask else if me this would be all I’d use at home.

Order one and test it during the extended return period, to make sure it works for you. I’m using a 12.9 for a few years mow and really like the size.

As well as individual apps, it also makes split view more useful as you can have two apps open in iPad mode, whereas on a smaller model I think they revert to iPhone layouts?

nothing on iOS or iPadOS really takes advantage of bigger screens. Developers, including Apple themselves seem to develop everything with the smallest device in mind ... very unfortunate. especially with the big iPad and iPhone 12 Pro Max
Its frustrating because we’ve had these larger screen variants of the iPhone and iPad for 5 years yet Apple has done nothing to take advantage of it. A tablet sized phone should have multitasking and pencil support, and a computer sized tablet should be able to run Apples own computer programs. But instead its “Scale up the size in order to scale up the price and let 3rd party fill in the rest.”

* BTW. There is a slight difference in how the 12.9 handles webpages. Some websites show full versions on split screen but as someone who moved from 12.9 to 11 then I haven’t found it to be significant at all. I think the 12.9 is an amazing product but it just feels like a neglected device that should do so much more.

Appreciate everyone's responses. It's a shame that apps don't necessarily take advantage of bigger screens. After a lot of thinking, I've decided I'm going to go for the 12.9" version nevertheless. My rationale being:

  • Portability vs. Display. Having done a bit of research it seems to me that when buying either Pro model, I'm going to be making a sacrifice on portability or screen real estate. Looking at my use case, I've only ever taken my iPad Pro 10.5 outside the house a handful of times. I'm a very light traveller and will usually take only my iPhone. Instead, I use the iPad around the house. In my case, I feel having the bigger display is worth losing a little bit of portability.

  • Price. I'm grateful to be in the very fortunate position of being able to consider either Pro model at a time when many people are struggling financially. At the Pro price range, the cost difference between the 11" and 12.9" is negligible. Both are going to be expensive devices regardless and I'm okay with spending slightly more for a potentially better day-to-day experience.

  • Difference. I am replacing the iPad Pro 10.5 because of display issues that has reached the point of affecting my day-to-day work. When I think of the 11" it doesn't feel to me that it would be a drastically different change or upgrade from my existing set up. In this regard, the 12.9" would feel like a bigger upgrade for me as it has the potential to alter my workflow and thinking in how I use iPad. It's a small point but still factors into my decision.

Really appreciate the help everyone has provided.
