iPad Pro Do blu-ray digital downloads mean free HDR (and 4K) upgrades for iPad Pro?

So you get a digital download coupon with your blu-ray and you redeem it with iTunes. If that movie is offered in 4K and HDR, do you get that version on your ipad pro?

If so, this makes redeeming with itunes a no-brainer vs vudu, etc...

Nothing in my library currently offers it, but maybe one of you guys know.

NOTE: I know that 4K doesn’t work on ipad pro, but HDR does.

Really? I’ve bought a few movies recently like guardians of the galaxy vol 2 that have iTunes as an option.

Maybe I’m just not buying very many...

Maybe it's region based, but I've not seen iTune codes for well over 2 years now.

I always try to get the blu-rays that have iTunes compatible on the back, so yes you get the movie in HD and even 4K now and HDR, with the blu-ray, unfortunately WB doesn’t give you that code only Vudu like if you bought Wonderwoman on blu-ray. Different studios have different agreements.

Depends on the studio. Most have switched to Ultraviolet, I think. Last 4K Blu-ray I purchased (Batman v Superman?), the code redeemed as 4K on VUDU.

The movies I redeemed through digital copies on iTunes that show as supporting 4K/HDR are Despicable Me 1 (4K only, no HDR) and 2, Ghost in the Shell, Hidden Figures, Peanuts (4K only) and Star Trek.

Movies that are available on UHD 4K discs but have not been upgraded yet on my library are Dredd, Secret Life of Pets, Sing, and The Boss Baby. Maybe by Friday?

Titles I purchased as HD on iTunes that have been upgraded to 4K/HDR are Ex Machinaand Mad Max.

The vast majority of my redeemed digital copies are Disney and Marvel movies. Guess whenever Apple reaches that agreement with Disney is when we’ll get upgraded. Though only 3 uhd disc titles are available/announced thus far.

Most of those are the same for me, off the top of my head I also [got upgrades] on Arrival, John Wick 1 and 2, The Martian, Deadpool and funny enough, the original Ghostbusters.


Semi-off topic: Ex Machina is one of the best films in the last decade, certainly ranks among the best SciFi ever.

I dont know. Ive got 3 AppleTV's and over I prefer the presentation of iTunes movies over the competition. But the limitation of having movies locked down to "Only Apple Devices" has been awful because I'm tied down to a format and a box that doesn't play well with others.

But still. Apples got me in their claws because I've got 150+ iTunes movies so I'm not switching any time soon. But with studios giving up on iTunes then hopefully that Vudu and Prime Video app will actually get released.

Vudu app is already available on AppleTV (4th gen). We just watched Wonder Woman (Ultraviolet) yesterday on the Vudu app. No need to AirPlay anymore. Alas, no idea if the redeemed code is 4K or 1080p only. Probably need to check on the PS4 for that.

I downloaded Mad Max, Ghost in the Shell, Despicable Me 2, and Star Trek. I've watched Mad Max probably 10+ times so the extra HDR pop was definitely noticeable to me.

I purchased the UHD bluray of Ghost in the Shell and the digital iTunes copy was upgraded so I did a quick comparison. The iPad Pro picture definitely seemed comparable color wise. Resolution on 4K TV is obviously better. The blacks on my iPad are better though.

Star Trek colors definitely seemed to be richer and the lens flare actually a bit less distracting. The resolution seemed worse though. It is the HD copy so not sure why this is.

Despicable Me 2 was already super colorful so can't say I really noticed a true upgrade.

It'll be interesting to test against the Apple TV versions once mine arrives since Ghost in the Shell is the only disc I have to compare against my iTunes library at the moment.

So you felt you could tell the crispness difference in 4K HDR and non 4K HDR between the iPad and your TV?

In motion, very hard to see the extra resolution. Did a freeze frame a few times and could see more details. But honestly the iPad viewing experience was pretty close. But then again my 4K TV is not top of the line mid tier sub $1000 Sony.

Awesome thanks for the info! I watched HDR in my iPad last night, and it looked amazing!
