I bought an iPhone from a seller on eBay in Canada and he has 20 iPhone 12s for sale for under retail price (it goes for $1265 with tax here, he's selling for $1000) and I asked why he's selling so many.

He told me these were given to employees at an advertising agency. Do certain companies or advertising agencies get discounts on Apple products or something?

(I checked his eBay profile and he has 100% positive feedback with over 200 sales of brand new iPhones and MacBooks over the last 2 years)

Apple does offer discounts to bulk purchases in education and businesses. Usually 10% or so. Not huge discounts.

But that doesn’t explain why this seller has so many NEW phones.

I work in advertising and have never been offered an iPhone from my employer...

I highly doubt that. Maybe money laundering.

Maybe buying them on a credit card and selling for cash ......or has bought them cheap from someone doing the same ..... not uncommon.

This wouldn’t be the first time that somebody abuses their corporate purchasing channel and sell stuff off privately.

I used to work for a media agency with Apple discount which was around 5% give or take.

Hmm. Even at 5% off, they would be losing money. Taxes considered, they are selling for 21% off.

Certain companies with Apple business account with their local Apple store may get around 5-25% off depending on how much they spend at that store the previous year. This is different from the epp store for big corporations. At least that’s what I was told back before COVID and the Apple specialist was promoting that Apple store’s business program.

This is true but usually the company has a deal with Apple where all devices are enrolled in DEP to avoid re-sales.

Our organization buys tons of Apple products and our sales exec gets us discounts from 10% to 30%.
All devices purchased since 2011 are enrolled into the DEP MDM program.

I'd double check the purchase by making sure there are no restriction profiles or VPN when you activate the phone.

Cool, thank you. I will check! If it does have those profiles or VPN, what would that mean in terms of functionality of the phone?

If the phone has a restriction and/or a forced VPN, then the phone may become "viewable" by the original corporate / government / business owner.

Data thru the phone can be seen/tracked, cloud filtering, phone call logs, apps restricted, iOS updates restricted, even search engines may be restricted to "Safe" or PG13 searches, etc...

In our data sensitive organization as an example, we use the DEP / MDM features such as: Remote bricking or wiping, location ID, photo storage remote viewing, screen shot restriction, download restricted apps (only whitelisted by us) and authorized login ID credentials.
