I am not sure if I still have a notification (or recovery) email address. My question is: how do I find out if I do and what it is? If there is a simple way to find out I'd really appreciate hearing about it!
If it helps, below is the sordid history of how I think I got to the point of asking the question; maybe it will make it clearer.
When I accessed my Apple ID account recently I noticed that I had a notification email address that was no longer valid, so I tried to update it. I put in a new address and pressed continue. This resulted in a splash screen that said I should log onto a trusted device to continue. I tried and could not see on any trusted device what I was supposed to do to continue the process of updating the email. I checked the Apple user support forum and there seemed to be a lot of confusion on this issue about a year ago; but nothing there was helpful, so . . .
I went back to my Apple ID account and deleted the old, no longer valid email. I thought this might be necessary to add a new one. Now my Apple ID >Sign-in and Security setting shows neither a notification nor a recovery email address.
The Apple support site 102529 says:
. . . if you don't use two-factor authentication or two-step verification (learn how to check what security method you use), you have the option to add a rescue email address to your account for more security. You can see this option when you sign in to appleid.apple.com.
I checked and apparently, I set up two-factor authentication with one phone number and four trusted devices. (I don't remember doing this, but must have; I don't think I've ever tried to access my account from a non-trusted device.)
The support site also says:
If you had a rescue email address on file when you upgraded to two-factor authentication or two-step verification, that email becomes your notification email. You can also use these steps to edit your notification email address. If you remove the notification email, you won't be able to add a new one.
It looks like I skewered myself: my old (invalid) rescue email address became my notification email address when I implemented(?) two-factor authentication. Now, I've deleted the notification email address and am not able to add a new one.
I'd like to have a recovery or notification email address. Is it still possible? Do I still need one? Or, do I need to set up "Account Recovery" in lieu of having an email address?
(Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else but I searched the forums for "notification/recovery email" nothing was helpful.
